We all recognize the enormous impact that the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, as well as the resulting dangerous situation at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, has had on Japan. The United States is continuing to do everything it can and should do to support our close friends, the people of Japan, as they respond to this disaster. This includes providing humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, technical expertise as well as equipment as requested. The American people have also opened up their hearts. Many have given generously to support the ongoing relief efforts. As President Obama said on March 17, we are confident that Japan will recover and rebuild because of the strength and spirit of the Japanese people.

American celebrity Paris Hilton has not learned from her fellow American actor Robert Downey Jr. about the implications of pleading guilty to criminal charges. Years ago in 2001, Robert Downey Jr. pleaded no contest (a.k.a. nolo contendere) to drug-related charges so that he could avoid having to do jail time. Consequently, Japanese immigration authorities detained Downey when he tried to enter Japan in 2009.

Tabatchnik and his partners are seeking approval to join a federal program that lets foreigners who invest at least $500,000 in certain job-creating ventures to obtain U.S. residency with their families.
Fourteen EB-5 regional centers had been approved by in Florida alone, with more requests like Tabatchnik’s pending. More than 80 are authorized nationwide, said U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

"Next Generation Automated Gate System" installed at Kansai International Airport. Total of Ten Sets to Be Installed at Japan's Three International Airports: Narita, Kansai and Centrair.
TOKYO, February 2, 2010 – OKI Electric Industry (TSE: 6703) today announced that it has delivered a “Next Generation Automated Gate System” capable of managing immigration work and of identifying individuals. Ten gates in total will be installed at Japan’s three international airports: Narita (4 sets), Kansai (4 sets) and Centrair (2 sets).
訪日旅行者数の推移
日本政府観光局が２５日発表した０９年の訪日外国人旅行者数（推計値）は、前年比１５６万人減（１８．７％減）の６７９万人と６年ぶりに減少に転じ、１９６４年の調査開始以来最大の減少数になった。リーマン・ショック以降の世界的な景気低迷と新型インフルエンザの流行、円高などが響いた。
月別では０８年８月から０９年１０月まで、過去最長の１５カ月連続で前年同月を下回り、新型インフルエンザの感染が急拡大した５～６月は３割以上落ち込んだ。０９年１１月以降は為替相場が安定したことから韓国や豪州からの観光客が増え、プラスに転じた。
国・地域別では、１位の韓国からの旅行者数は３３．４％減、２位の台湾は２６．３％減で、計１１６万人減った。一方、昨年７月に個人観光ビザの発給を始めた中国は０．６％増の１００万６０００人と３位で、主要国・地域で唯一、増加した。
日本人の海外旅行者数はビジネス需要が落ち込み、３．４％減の１５４４万６０００人と３年連続で減少した。【寺田剛】
