Q&A: Lost ESTA application number

I applied for ESTA before, but I have lost my application number. How can I find my application number? I want to update my ESTA information, how can I do that?

You are not required to present a printout of your ESTA application number to board your flight. That number is transmitted electronically to the airlines. However, if you are waiting for your approval status to be confirmed, and you did not keep a copy of your application number to log in to see the status, you will have to re-apply. Your old application number will be automatically cancelled and a new one will be generated for you.

Knowing your approval status has other benefits. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can sometimes revoke your existing ESTA. You would be greatly inconvenienced if you arrive to the airport only to find out that your ESTA has the “Travel Not Authorized” status.

Note that you are not required to update your travel information in ESTA.  Providing that information to DHS is optional.  So if you have lost your application number and cannot update that information the next time you travel to the U.S., don’t worry about it. If you did not print out or write down your application number in order to update your application or check your status, you will need to re-apply. But be sure to print out or email to yourself your application number next time, so you have that number handy when you travel.
